Respiratory Viral Illness (RVI) Student Guidelines

Effective August 5, 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) ended the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for healthcare workers. Healthcare workers are no longer required to obtain COVID-19 vaccination.

Clinical students may be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to their clinical site. Students that have a deeply held religious belief preventing them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine can submit a COVID-19 vaccine religious exception form via TrackMy. The form will be reviewed by the Office of Student Experience. Responses will be sent via TrackMy.

Students who need a COVID-19 vaccine should schedule an appointment with Student Health Service via MyChart or by calling: 909-558-8770.

Student Health Service provides care to students who are located in the state of California. Students located outside California should consult their primary care provider (PCP) in their home state. 

Symptoms

Students should stay home if they have any of the following symptoms (not including a chronic medical condition such as migraines, asthma, IBS/colitis, or premenstrual syndrome):

• Fever (temperature ≥ 100.0˚F) 
• Chills
• Cough
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Nasal congestion or runny nose/sneezing
• Muscle or body aches
• Sore throat 
• New loss of taste or smell
• Nausea or vomiting
• Soft stools or diarrhea
• Decrease in appetite
• Not feeling well

COVID-19 testing is available to all students through Student Health Service by making an appointment with one of our clinicians.

The following return-to-campus/clinical criteria applies to all students.

Student Return-to-Campus/Clinical Criteria

Applies to: All Respiratory Viral Infections*

Step 1: Symptom Check

Do you have new onset of symptoms of respiratory illness/worsening of baseline symptoms?

If NO:

• And you have tested negative for a respiratory viral infection* other than SARs-CoV-2, you may return to campus/clinical.

If YES: Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: If treatment/clearance is needed:

• Call 911 in case of an emergency
• Visit a Student Health clinician or your primary care provider (PCP)
• Call 909-558-8770 or schedule via MyChart

Return-to-Campus/Clinical Criteria

You may return when all of the following are true:

• At least 3 days have passed since symptom onset (return on Day 4)
• At least 24 hours have passed with no fever (without fever-reducing medication)
• Symptoms are improving

Additional guidance:

• Wear a mask through Day 10 if returning before 10 days from symptom onset
• Individuals who are moderately or severely immunocompromised may need to remain off campus longer. Consult Student Health or your PCP for guidance.**

Notes

• *This guidance does not apply to novel viral pathogens. Follow applicable public health guidance.
• **Moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals may shed virus for prolonged periods.

All students are encouraged to practice the following preventive measures:

• Frequent and appropriate hand hygiene
• Utilize proper cough/sneeze etiquette
• Self-screen daily for symptoms
