Overview
In alignment with WSCUC’s 2023 Standards of Accreditation, Loma Linda University has discontinued separate Institutional Learning Outcome (ILO) reporting. Programs are now encouraged to integrate relevant ILOs within their Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), supporting a unified, evidence-based approach to assessment and an annual reflection on LLU’s core values: compassion, excellence, humility, integrity, justice, teamwork, and wholeness.
Quick take: Annual values update for all programs; comprehensive PLO assessment documented within the regular program review cycle.
Annual Reporting Expectations
Each academic program submits a brief annual update highlighting:
- LLU Values Alignment — A concise narrative or examples showing how curriculum, student experiences, scholarship, and service reflect LLU’s values of compassion, excellence, humility, integrity, justice, teamwork, and wholeness.
- Continuous Improvement Highlights — Major assessment activities, findings, actions, or follow-ups completed during the year (if applicable).
This light-touch update keeps mission and values in focus while supporting a sustainable culture of continuous improvement.
Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) Assessment
Formal assessment of PLOs is documented within each program’s program review and demonstrates:
- Achievement of PLOs using direct and indirect evidence;
- Reflection on student success indicators (retention, completion, post-graduation outcomes);
- Use of findings to improve curriculum, pedagogy, and student support.
This comprehensive evidence meets WSCUC’s expectations for systematic evaluation and improvement.
Program Review Cycles
| Program Type | Description | Program Review Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| WSCUC-Only | Programs accredited solely by WSCUC. | Submit a full Program Review Report every six (6) years following LLU’s program review schedule. |
| WSCUC-Plus | Programs that hold both WSCUC accreditation and a professional/specialized accreditor. | Submit a copy of the program review/self-study documents provided to the professional accreditor, on the cycle prescribed by that accreditor. |
Both categories are expected to demonstrate PLO assessment, use of results for improvement, and explicit LLU values alignment.
Why this model?
This integrated approach reduces redundant reporting, aligns with professional accreditation timelines, and reinforces LLU’s mission-driven assessment philosophy. It centers program-level evidence of student learning and values integration while meeting WSCUC’s expectations for systematic evaluation, continuous improvement, and public accountability.
