Loma Linda University Is a Carnegie R2 University

Loma Linda University has been designated Research 2 (R2): High Research Spending and Doctorate Production in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications. This is the second consecutive cycle LLU has earned R2 status. The designation stays in effect through 2028.

What Carnegie R2 Means

The Carnegie Classification is a national framework that describes colleges and universities by research activity and degree production. An R2 designation recognizes universities with a high level of research spending and strong doctoral degree output. For LLU, it marks a growing research enterprise built around discovery that reaches patients and communities, not just the lab.

What This Means for You

At Loma Linda University, you'll do more than learn about the latest advances in healthcare. You'll study in an environment that's helping create them. As a Carnegie R2 university, LLU pairs health sciences education with active research, so you'll graduate ready to lead with knowledge, compassion, and purpose.

  • Learn from active researchers. Faculty across medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, and the health sciences bring their own research into the classroom and clinical training.
  • Train for where healthcare is headed. Your coursework reflects current research, emerging technologies, and evidence-based practice, so you're ready for what patient care looks like next.
  • Build skills employers look for. Research sharpens critical thinking, collaboration, and evidence-based decision making, skills that carry into graduate school, residency, and practice.
  • Work across disciplines. You'll train alongside students and faculty from other health fields, the same team-based model used in real patient care.
  • Go beyond the classroom. Depending on your program, you may take part in research, work alongside a faculty mentor, or contribute to a project aimed at improving health outcomes.
  • Present and publish. Research work can lead to conference presentations or contributions to published work, both strong additions to a grad school or residency application.
  • Earn a degree with real research standing behind it. An R2 designation reflects the strength of LLU's academic and research environment, and that standing carries into how your degree is recognized.

Research with Purpose

Faculty, students, clinicians, and researchers at LLU work together to advance whole person care, explore new approaches to healthcare, and take on real problems facing our communities. The Carnegie R2 designation reflects that work and LLU's continued investment in research, education, and compassionate care.
