Loma Linda University has been designated Research 2 (R2): High Research Spending and Doctorate Production in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications. This is the second consecutive cycle LLU has earned R2 status. The designation stays in effect through 2028.

The Carnegie Classification is a national framework that describes colleges and universities by research activity and degree production. An R2 designation recognizes universities with a high level of research spending and strong doctoral degree output. For LLU, it marks a growing research enterprise built around discovery that reaches patients and communities, not just the lab.
At Loma Linda University, you'll do more than learn about the latest advances in healthcare. You'll study in an environment that's helping create them. As a Carnegie R2 university, LLU pairs health sciences education with active research, so you'll graduate ready to lead with knowledge, compassion, and purpose.
Faculty, students, clinicians, and researchers at LLU work together to advance whole person care, explore new approaches to healthcare, and take on real problems facing our communities. The Carnegie R2 designation reflects that work and LLU's continued investment in research, education, and compassionate care.
