PROFESSION
The success of a team of health care professionals will need to have the information organized so that decisions and patient care plans can be made. The health information manager will bring together data to assist the health care team, the patient, and the administration staff. The student who has interests in computer science, business management, the law, and medicine will find the role of the health information manager challenging and rewarding. Health information managers find many opportunities in policy-making, financial management, decision support and research in varying sectors of the health industry. Once known as "medical record librarians," today's managers need more information and understanding as they bring together all of the data available as a policy is made or as a patient is treated. A person who is interested in how information is processed and retained will find this role challenging, as well as satisfying. Cutting-edge technology, which is always changing, plays a big part in the arena of information management.

PROGRAM

The Health Information Management program begins in the autumn quarter and is based on the completion of two years of prerequisite course work at an accredited college or university. Concentration on the health information management subject matter begins at Loma Linda University. It is the only program of its kind in California and has been offered by LLU since 1962.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION AND CERTIFICATION
Upon completion of the program, and on the recommendation of the faculty, graduates are eligible to write the qualifying examination of the American Health Information Management Association for the designation of RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator).

Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for admission, the applicant must have the following: 

  1. Completed a minimum of 90 quarter or 60 semester units at an accredited college or university
  2. The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. C-minus grades are not acceptable for transfer credit

Prerequisites

- 16 quarter or 11 semester units of humanities 
- College algebra (two years of high school algebra with a C grade or better accepted) 
- Human anatomy and physiology with lab (complete sequence) 
- Medical terminology 
- Select remainder units from chemistry, geology, mathematics, astronomy, physics, or statistics 
- English composition (complete sequence) 
- Cultural diversity course (cultural anthropology) 
- Psychology (one course)
- Select one class from sociology, economics, geography, political science 
- Business or Interpersonal communications 
- Personal health or nutrition 
- Two physical activity courses

    The cost of attendance varies from year to year.  Please contact the office of Student Finance for up-to-date costs.
    • Estimated amounts are for the academic year specified only. Amounts are based on full-time attendance for the number of months enrolled per academic year. International students need to calculate 12 months of living expenses based on these amounts.
    • Amounts are expected to increase each year consistent with inflation in the professional education sector.
    • To qualify for financial aid, most students must be enrolled at least half time in an aid eligible program and be taking degree requirements. Half time is 6 units in a quarter for undergraduate programs and 4 units in a quarter for graduate programs.
