Program Description

The BS degree in Communication Sciences can lead to the Speech-Language Pathology Assistants license and also prepares students for graduate level studies in Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, or related fields.

Speech-language pathologists assess and provide clinical services to people who cannot communicate clearly. These individuals may have problems with articulation, stuttering, voice, understanding and producing language, attention, memory and/or problem solving. Audiologists assess and provide clinical services to people who have hearing or balance problems.

Admissions Requirements

General Requirements:

  • Official transcripts from an accredited institution
  • 96 quarter units / 64 semester units of general education coursework
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Three letters of recommendation, preferably academic – requested through the online application
  • Personal statement – uploaded through the online application
  • Applicants who are missing one or two prerequisite courses may receive a provisional acceptance at the discretion of the admissions committee. Missing prerequisite courses must be completed during the bachelor’s program at Loma Linda University. Prerequisites

General Education Requirements by Domain:

Each domain requires a minimum number of units (in parentheses) and a description of specific course requirements. For example, students must take 16 quarter units of Arts & Humanities. Those 16 units must come from at least three of the listed content areas.

Arts & Humanities (16 quarter units / 11 semester units) – courses must include at least three of the following content areas:

  • civilization/history
  • art
  • literature
  • modern language
  • philosophy
  • religion
  • general humanities electives

Natural Sciences (12 quarter units / 8 semester units) – at least one of the natural science courses must include a lab component

  • one biological science from among the following:
    • human anatomy and/or physiology
    • general biology
    • microbiology
    • life science
  • one physical science – physics or chemistry
  • statistics – one introductory or general statistics course

Social Sciences (12 quarter units / 8 semester units) – courses must include at least two of the following content areas:

  • anthropology
  • economics
  • geography
  • political science
  • psychology
  • sociology

Written & Oral Communication (9 quarter units / 6 semester units)

  • a complete sequence of English composition
  • one additional course – examples include:
    • information systems
    • critical thinking
    • public speaking

Health & Wellness (2 quarter units / 1.5 semester units)

  • one course in health or nutrition – examples include:
    • personal health
    • personal nutrition
    • population health
    • global health
    • community nutrition
  • two physical activity courses (totaling 1 unit) or military discharge papers (DD214)

Electives: Additional electives as needed to complete the 96 quarter / 64 semester total unit requirement.

    • Estimated amounts are for the academic year specified only. Amounts are based on full-time attendance for the number of months enrolled per academic year. International students need to calculate 12 months of living expenses based on these amounts.
    • Amounts are expected to increase each year consistent with inflation in the professional education sector.
    • To qualify for financial aid, most students must be enrolled at least half time in an aid eligible program and be taking degree requirements. Half time is 6 units in a quarter for undergraduate programs and 4 units in a quarter for graduate programs.
