It is based on interviews conducted among sex workers working in karaoke bars in Bangkok. Findings show that most sex workers experience different levels of life difficulty. The level of life difficulty also affects the experience of internal conflicts regarding sex and morality. Finally religion has been used as a form of ritual purification in dealing with internal sense of conflicts. (10/2015)
  • Chatrung, C., Sorajjakool, S., Amnatsatsue, K. (2014). Wellness and Religious Coping among Thai Individuals Living with Chronic Kidney Disease in Southern California. Accepted for publication, Journal of Religion and Health. October 10, (DOI) 10.1007/s10943-014-9958-4. This qualitative research is based on eight Thai participants living with chronic kidney disease living in Southern California. Four emerging themes are (a) wellness, (b) self-care, (c) impact of illness on life, and (d) religious coping. Family relations, social support, and religious coping affected self-care and how they managed their everyday activities. Knowledge about the disease and its mechanism were crucial to the decision-making process in relation to self-care. Good self-care and appropriate self-management led to wellness and improved quality of life. Religion provided a belief system focusing on the place of acceptance that was essential for coping with emotional stressors. (10/2014) (link)

This qualitative research investigates the role religion plays in relation to blood pressure control among a Southern California Thai population with hypertension. A total of 15 Thai individuals between the ages of 45-95 were interviewed. All participants indicated that stress plays a significant role in determining their ability to manage hypertension. Of the 15 participants, 14 acknowledged that religion plays an important role by helping them manage their stress level and offering them beneficial instruction about health practices such as diet and exercise. This qualitative study is based on interviews with ten Thai women from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Provinces in Northern Thailand who are victims of AIDS. It is an attempt to learn how individuals who have no access to mental health facilities cope with distress in life. The analysis shows three important factors that enhance coping ability: support and acceptance from families and friends, life purpose, and religious beliefs (Buddhism) pertaining to the acceptance of mortality. It concludes by suggesting the need to recognize other ways of coping beyond the scope of traditional Western psychotherapeutic approaches. (12/2006)

  • Sorajjakool, Siroj and Prayapruit, Apipa (2017). Perspectives on the Role of Higher Education in Relation to Thai Farmers. Human Behavior, Development and Society,  May 2017. While Thai Higher Education has sought to facilitate social mobility for local Thai armers who are among the poorest in the country, the socio-economic status o farmers seems to be in the decline. This study explores perspectives of scholars and notable armers in regards to the role of higher education within the context of Thai armers seeking qualitative data to the question, what has h igher education done to enhance life quality for local farmers? This qualitative study interviews eight participants. Two of the participants are notable farmers, one is a local activist in northern Thailand and the rest are acaemics researching the ield. According to these participants, 1) there is a lack o attempts to understand lived experiences of local farmers by institutions of higher learing and 2) Thai higher educaiton has been dominated primarily by Western ideology/modernity in a way that deligitimizes all other forms of knowledge, particularly that of local wisdom.  (05/2017)
