About Mohamud Sheek-Hussein, MD
Short Bio
Dr Mohamed Sheek Hussein is a Global Public Health Professor and Community Medicine Scientist with over 35 years of experience in preventive medicine, epidemiology of infectious diseases and vaccine-preventable diseases. He has led major public health initiatives and research across the UAE and internationally, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he chaired the steering committee at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAEU. In this role, he oversaw vaccination, screening, isolation, and quarantine operations for faculty, students, and staff.
He has held academic and scientific positions globally, including a Visiting Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2018–2023) and Visiting Associate Professor of Public Health at Loma Linda University (2018–present). He has led international collaborations, supervised MPH and PhD candidates, and coordinated medical school public health rotations. His teaching and research emphasize outbreak management, surveillance, neglected tropical diseases, and the control of emerging viral infections.
He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and was the principal investigator on several UAEU-funded research projects. His contributions have earned him recognition including the ASPHER Research Excellence Award (2023). He is also actively involved in public engagement, featured in international media and podcasts addressing public health challenges such as monkeypox stigma in the region.
He introduced hands-on field training for students in UAE’s primary healthcare centers, linking academic learning with real-world application in disease surveillance and prevention. His scholarly work is reflected in an h-index of 25.
