Special Projects

  • Towards Global Health Equity: A High-Impact Partnership for Cancer Treatment In 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change competition, a global initiative to solve a critical global challenge with a single award of 100 Million Dollars. Our “Towards Global Health Equity: A High-Impact Partnership for Cancer Treatment” application was submitted through Loma Linda University Health (LLUH). LLUH will partner with one of the leading cancer hospitals in the low-middle income African country Malawi to bring advanced cancer treatment technology, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), to Malawi cancer patients soon. BNCT is particularly helpful for women with locally advanced cervical cancer who cannot afford to be away from home for many weeks for a conventional course of radiation chemistry combined with chemotherapy. • The 10th Annual Loma Linda Workshop Uniting Disciplines for Advanced Medical Physics Research: A Decade of Innovation and Collaboration Together with computer science engineer Prof. Keith Schubert, applied mathematician Prof. Yair Censor, and Medical Physics researcher Prof. Katia Parodi, I organized the Tenth Annual Loma Linda Workshop on Particle Imaging and Radiation Treatment Planning  that took place from July 29-31, 2024. 95 attendees registered for the workshop, with 21 participating in person on the LLU campus. Since their inception in 2015, the summer workshops at Loma Linda University have served as interdisciplinary meetings, bringing together applied mathematicians, computer scientists, medical physicists, radiobiologists, and radiation oncologists. These gatherings have fostered successful research projects and collaborations that continue to thrive. (07/2024)
  • 2024 Establishing the First Preclinical BNCT Facility in the U.S. As part of Loma Linda University Health’s Stronger Together campaign, launched in February 2024, I am proud to play a pivotal role in establishing the first preclinical research Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) facility in the United States at Loma Linda University Health. This groundbreaking initiative is a significant milestone in advancing cancer treatment and theranostics.   With my extensive background as a physicist and physician scientist, I have dedicated my career to promoting particle therapy. My efforts in this project are a testament to my commitment to pioneering innovative cancer treatments and enhancing patient care through cutting-edge research. The preclinical BNCT facility will provide a safe platform for transitioning to a clinical BNCT program using the latest accelerator-based BNCT technology. It will also be instrumental in obtaining FDA approval for this novel technology in the United States, paving the way for its clinical application and broader adoption. The establishment of this BNCT facility marks a new era in preclinical research, providing a unique platform for developing and testing novel therapeutic approaches. I am honored to contribute to this transformative project, which aligns with my lifelong dedication to advancing medical science and improving patient outcomes.   (02/2024 - Present)
