International Service

  • LLU SIMS team member at Universidad Adventista de Bolivia. Cochabamba, Bolivia. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary student and staff team, provided health fairs to local areas. Additionally, supervised two teddy bear clinics which helped to educate approximately 400 school children about health and what it is like to visit the doctor by utilizing play and developmentally appropriate language. The children were also provided with a therapeutic activity to support them in verbalizing and expressing their feelings.  (03/2015)
  • Child life mission service learning trip leader. La Mision, Baja California, Mexico. In collaboration with fellow child life faculty and students, the team provides service to the Door of Faith Orphanage (DOFO) in La Mision, Baja California, Mexico. During this annual trip, the team visits a wellness center and interacts with the children at DOFO during a Teddy Bear Clinic, while providing therapeutic art activities and outdoor play. Utilizing developmentally appropriate language and play techniques, the team provides children with the opportunity to learn about a variety of experiences that happen when going for a doctor or hospital visit. The therapeutic art activity and outdoor play is provided to support children's normative development and in verbalizing and/or expressing their feelings. (03/2019 - Present)
  • Child life program development in China. Assisted with the development of a child life program at The Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University, P.R. China. Provide lectures at psychosocial conferences during child life student/faculty trips, as well as supervise students providing hands-on child life interventions with pediatric patients. Students participate in therapeutic activities and health care play during Teddy Bear Clinics with the children.  (03/2014 - Present)
