Biosketch

H. Bryant Nguyen, MD, MS, MBA, is Professor of Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Basic Sciences at Loma Linda University. He serves as Division Head of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Hyperbaric, and Sleep Medicine and Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine. He is also Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Advanced Lung Disease Center. In addition, he holds leadership roles in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Critical Care Medicine fellowship programs. His clinical practice includes medical intensive care, emergency medicine, and tele-critical care.

Dr. Nguyen's career integrates medicine, computer science, clinical research, education, and health system leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics from California State University, Long Beach. After working in the industry as a principal software engineer, he received his medical degree from UC Irvine, completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital, and completed fellowship training in Critical Care Medicine at Loma Linda University. He also holds a graduate certificate in Biostatistics from UC San Diego, an MBA from Drexel University, and certification as a Certified Physician Executive. His additional training includes artificial intelligence in healthcare through UC Berkeley, MIT, and the American Board of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.

Dr. Nguyen is nationally and internationally recognized for his work, with foundational contributions to early goal-directed therapy, lactate clearance, severe sepsis and septic shock management, quality-improvement bundles, critical care ultrasound, and evidence-based resuscitation. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, editorials, book chapters, abstracts, and educational resources in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, CHEST, Critical Care Medicine, Annals of Emergency Medicine, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Nguyen has participated in funded research, guidelines development, and educational programs, serving as principal investigator, site principal investigator, lead principal investigator, sub-investigator, faculty member, and editor. His funding portfolio spans sepsis and shock, hemodynamic monitoring, resuscitation and simulation education, acute kidney injury biomarkers, post-cardiac arrest care, airway management, COVID-19, patient-centered outcomes, and multicenter therapeutic trials.

A major focus of his academic career has been translating evidence into clinical pathways, quality-improvement programs, and educational initiatives. He has served as a clinical champion and originator for institutional programs in severe sepsis and septic shock, therapeutic hypothermia and post-cardiac arrest care, and percutaneous tracheostomy performed by intensivists. He has developed simulation-based curricula in sepsis resuscitation, advanced airway management, and hemodynamic assessment for medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and practicing physicians.

Dr. Nguyen is an experienced clinician, teacher, lecturer, researcher, and academic program leader. He has participated in programs through the Society of Critical Care Medicine, CHEST, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and international critical care organizations. Mentorship remains central to Dr. Nguyen's academic mission. He has guided medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty in clinical research, quality improvement, scholarly writing, leadership development, and professional growth.

Through his career, Dr. Nguyen has remained committed to improving outcomes for critically ill patients, advancing evidence-based practice, developing innovative education, and preparing the next generation of clinicians, physician-scientists, and academic leaders.
