SIMS holds island-style open house

Darla Severin (right), second-year public health student, passes out information to Sean Koon, MD, who often volunteers as a medical preceptor, while Andrew Barnett (middle), second-year medical student and winner of the photo contest, enjoys the food.

The green lawn in front of the Students for International Mission Service's (SIMS) cottage was transformed into an island for open house on October 16. Tiki torches illuminated the celebration as many faculty and students gathered to share and learn about each other's experiences. Booths displayed pictures, cultural souvenirs, and information about mission trips journeyed to Ethiopia, Bolivia, Honduras, and many other countries. LLU office of student activities provided island food for everyone as well.

"The open house was an opportunity for students, faculty, and others to find out how they could get involved in service activities locally and/or abroad," says Martine Polycarpe, MPH, program director of SIMS. "The party also acted as a platform for past SIMS participants to share their stories and experiences with others who are interested in joining a SIMS team."

Throughout the night, a slide show presented pictures from SIMS trips, island music filled the air, and a drawing was held for giveaways, such as SIMS T-shirts. Ms. Polycarpe also announced the winner of the photo contest. Andrew Barnett, second-year medical student, won $100 for his photograph from Ethiopia.

Future SIMS destinations include Honduras during Christmas break and spring break and Brazil and India in the summer of 2004. For more information, you may call SIMS at 558-8089 or visit their website at <www.llu.edu/llu/sims>.
