MPH ENVH Track II The Environmental Health Specialist
Who should enroll
The environmental health specialist (HS) track (II) provides career skills in the environmental health sciences for individuals without previous professional experience. Graduates with these skills seek employment in private business/industry as environmental quality-control professionals; or in local, state, or federal government health departments/agencies. The program has been approved by the State of California Environmental Health Specialist Registration Committee, 601 North 7th Street, MS 396, P.O. Box 942732, Sacramento, CA 94234-7320. Satisfactory completion of this curriculum meets, in part, the eligibility requirements to sit for the Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) Examination administered by the California State Department of Health Services. Satisfactory performance on the examination qualifies individuals for practice as registered environmental health specialists in California and, by reciprocity, in the forty-nine remaining states.
Learner outcomes
Upon completion of the degree the graduate should be able to:
- Assess environmental exposures to working and nonworking populations.
- Conduct field surveys and analyze and evaluate environmental sampling data.
- Conduct applied environmental health research.
- Lead an interdisciplinary team to resolve environmental issues and contribute to conflict resolution and mediation
- Direct environmental projects as well as provide suitable consultation to stakeholders.
- Describe key environmental and occupational health legislation.
- Make policy recommendations and influence legislators on key environmental and occupational health issues.
- Conduct environmental health-risk assessments and contribute to a cost-benefit analysis process.
- Meet the eligibility requirements to sit for the California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) Examination.
- Demonstrate basic familiarity with the application of geoinformatics tools to environmental health data analysis and display.
PREREQUISITE
The following prerequisite courses must be completed prior to enrolling in the REHS programs in environmental health:
- Biological science with laboratory (one year)
- General chemistry with laboratory (one year)
- General physics with laboratory (one year)
- General microbiology with laboratory (one course)
- Calculus or college algebra (one course)
