Department of Nutrition
Message from the chair

I am delighted that you have an interest in the Department of Nutrition at Loma Linda.
We are in the business preparing health care professionals for the 21st century in the area of nutrition. Our mission is threefold: academics, research and service. We provide our students with the most current information on nutrition, with an emphasis on vegetarian nutrition, on public policy issues, management, and behavioral science, especially as it relates to diet. Those in the MPH Track 2 program and in the DrPH program have extensive opportunities for hands-on education in the field practicum component of our curriculum. If you are a potential student, let me encourage you to investigate the links to our academic programs, courses, and faculty found to the left.
If you have an interest in research you will want to explore both the research and resources links to the left. This will give you an overview of the research we are conducting in the department and will direct you to other resources of research in which we have an interest. Our research is focused primarily on vegetarian nutrition and on the nutritional aspects of tree nuts. We have conducted feeding studies on almonds, pecans and walnuts and you will be interested in looking at our findings which can be accessed through these links. As the editor, I can especially recommend the book Vegetarian Nutrition a single volume that covers the varied aspects of vegetarian nutrition for health professionals.
Our faculty and students are actively involved in service to the community and to the Seventh Day Adventist church. Many of our students are in engaged in health promotion through health clinics, health fairs, and cooking classes. Our faculty frequently conduct projects to enhance the well-being of underprivileged communities locally and internationally through nutrition education and lifestyle intervention.
I am a native of Barcelona, Spain where we pronounce the name Joan as Joe-on. After obtaining an MD in Barcelona I completed my DrPH at Loma Linda in 1989 and joined the faculty of the department. Since 1997 I have been the Chair of the Department of Nutrition. For more information on my own research, follow the faculty link to the left. I would be happy to answer any question you might have about our program, or direct your questions to the most appropriate faculty on our team. We hope our website provides the information you are seeking.
