The Department of Nutrition provides programs leading to the Master of Public Health (MPH) and the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degrees. The department also offers the Master of Science (MS) degree in nutrition through the Graduate school in the areas of nutritional science and clinical nutrition. Descriptions of these programs can be found at the academic programs link to the left.
These programs prepare public health nutritionists who can combine knowledge of nutrition science with competencies in education, behavioral science, management, and public policy to enhance the nutrition status of individuals, groups, and populations. Public health nutrition uses the science of nutrition and related disciplines to identify and solve nutrition-related health problems.
LLU nutrition programs are coordinated, meaning the classroom curriculum is enhanced with clinical applications and experiences in local medical facilities. Under-girding all educational experiences is a vegetarian approach to nutrition. Academic pursuits are designed to provide students with opportunities to learn, apply, and advance the scientific understanding of vegetarian related issues.
Nutrition degrees offered at LLU prepare undergraduate and graduate students to sit for the registration examinations of the Commission on Dietetic Registration to become registered dietitians (RD) or dietetic technician registered (DTR).
Recent additions to the nutrition curricula at LLU include two certificate options available through the undergraduate nutrition department in the School of Allied Health Professions. These options allow those with at least a BS degree to pursue registration status after appropriate academic and supervised practice experiences are successfully completed. Registration is through the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR).
