Program location

Georgetown, estimated population 75,000, is the capital of Guyana. The city, the largest in Guyana, is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Demerara River.

Climate/Weather

Guyana is hot but pleasant most of the year, particularly in the coastal belt cooled by ocean breezes. The average temperature ranges from 75 to 87 degrees. The rainy season is from May to June and again from December through January. Average rainfall in Guyana is 91 inches per year.

Site size

The hospital has 48 patient beds and the occupancy rate is 20 percent. The site sees an average of 25 outpatients per day, and the average group size is six.

Accommodations

Participants will be lodged in either a hospital room, a guest house, or a mission home, based on availability. Meals will be provided by the hospital, and fresh food is readily available for purchase locally. Water must be boiled before drinking. Showers are available, but the water is not hot. Laundry must be done by hand. In addition, it is advisable to bring a mosquito net for sleeping.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Georgetown, Guyana. SIMS will arrange transport from the airport to the site, which is located 60 miles away. Estimated travel time to the site is 1 hour by taxi or pick up.

Eligibility

This site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: medicine, international public health, health promotion, nutrition/dietetics, and non-health related fields.

SIMS arranges regular summer trips to this site.

Program cost

Application fee

The application fee for all SIMS-coordinated trips is $50.00. Trips during all other times of the year must be arranged on an individual basis with SIMS and the site. Students and professionals wishing to participate in a summer project must submit an application by the last week of February, prior to the summer they wish to go. Participants wishing to travel at other time during the year must submit an application four months prior to their desired departure dates. All late applications will be subject to a fine of $25.00.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.

Definitely go for it! It's a great experience. Be proactive in getting to know the staff and seeking things to get involved in. The only negative thing was too much down time. Get to know the doctors that work at the Georgetown Public Hospital as well (Dr. Roberts/Dr. Gabriel). They will let you round with them there too.
