Mailing addressOn account of Ecuador's varied regions and because of its location directly atop the equator, it is an excellent travel destination year-round. Rather than rotating through four seasons, most of Ecuador experiences oscillating wet and dry periods. The Andean Highlands though on the equator, are generally cooler than most people would expect. The climate in the Andes varies according to the altitude and the time of the year. In Quito the temperature ranges from 7 degrees C (55 F) at night, to 26 C (78 F) at noon, averaging 15 C (64 F). The highlands' dry season is June to August and the warmer, rainy season is from January to April.

Spanish is the official language spoken in Ecuador. Some indigenous populations also speak Quechua. In the major cities, English is spoken in hotels and tourism related businesses. At this site, about 2% of the staff speak English.
Transportation to siteParticipants will be lodged in a hospital room. Meals will be provided at the clinic. Fresh food is also available for purchase at local markets. Water must be boiled or chlorinated before drinking. Amenities at this site include running water, hot showers, and laundry service.
EligibilityParticipants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the Mariscale Sucre International Airport in Quito, Ecuador. From there, the site will arrange transportation from the airport. The clinic is located 3 miles from the airport, a 10 minute trip by taxi.
Program datesThis site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: nursing and laboratory technology. Other health-related fields may also apply. All participants going to this site must be fluent in Spanish.
Program costSIMS arranges regular summer trips to this site.
Application fee:
The application fee for all SIMS-coordinated trips is $50.00. Trips during all other times of the year must be arranged on an individual basis with SIMS and the site. Students and professionals wishing to participate in a summer project must submit an application by the last week of February, prior to the summer they wish to go. Participants wishing to travel at other time during the year must submit an application four months prior to their desired departure dates. All late applications will be subject to a fine of $25.00.

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
