Students for International Mission Service (SIMS)

Outlook, Spring 2000

Nepal
by Alisa Lorenz, School of Dentistry, dental hygiene '99

I would have no Taco Bell, no electricity, and no running water for a whole year!

Could I survive? These thoughts raced through my head as the instructor explained about typhoid and malaria. Here I was in the thick of getting oriented and prepared to be a student missionary.

Going as a student missionary had never really crossed my mind until my second year in college. I wandered into campus ministries one Friday and started looking at the call book and that's when all the questions started„where to go? What to do?

I had great ideas and plans, but God was leading me in His own plan. After one call fell through, my friend, Jenny, told me about a call to Nepal, and her enthusiasm was catching.

I had no idea where Nepal was or anything about it but I soon found myself on a plane ready to find out.

With lots of prayer and faith, God led me to a place I never dreamed of. Each experience and challenge I went through helped me grow and become more of the person God wants me to be.

I went to Nepal hoping to change lives, but I was the one who changed most. Deciding to be a student missionary was a big decision for me„but it was the right decision. Let God lead in your life and do His work and He will lead no matter where you are on His earth.

Editor's note: Ms. Lorenz has helped SIMS provide health care in Ethiopia and the Dominican Republic. She has also joined SIMS several times in Mexico.
